Understanding Skin Changes in Your 40s

In our forties, our skin undergoes a series of physiological changes that can significantly impact its appearance and texture. One of the most notable changes is a decrease in collagen production, the protein responsible for maintaining skin's firmness and elasticity. This decline leads to a loss of skin elasticity, resulting in the formation of wrinkles and fine lines.

Additionally, hormonal fluctuations, particularly in women approaching menopause, can contribute to changes in skin texture and tone. These hormonal shifts may lead to increased dryness, as well as a decrease in oil production, leaving the skin feeling parched and dull.

As we age, our skin's ability to retain moisture diminishes, leading to increased dryness and a compromised skin barrier function. This can result in a rough, flaky texture and an overall lack of radiance.

Furthermore, environmental factors such as sun exposure and pollution can exacerbate these changes, accelerating the aging process and causing further damage to the skin.

Overall, understanding these physiological changes is essential for developing an effective skincare routine tailored to the specific needs of mature skin. By addressing these concerns with targeted treatments and lifestyle modifications, we can help maintain the health and vitality of our skin well into our forties and beyond.

Essential Skincare Tips for Your 40s

Hydration Is Key!

Hydration is essential for skincare in your forties as it helps combat the increased dryness that often accompanies this stage of life. Adequate hydration not only helps replenish lost moisture but also supports skin elasticity, minimising the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Daily Skincare Routine

A simple morning and evening skincare routine for your 40s can make a world of difference in maintaining healthy, radiant skin. It doesn't have to be complicated, simply having one is the cornerstone of effective skincare, ensuring that you give your skin the attention and care it deserves to age gracefully and maintain its natural glow.

AM skincare routine in your 40s:

1. Cleanse

Starting your morning with a natural organic cleanser is a rejuvenating ritual that sets the tone for the day, especially for skin in the 40s. Cleansing not only removes impurities and excess oil but also prepares the skin to better absorb the nourishing ingredients of your skincare routine. Opting for a cleanser enriched with organic Patchouli essential oil can be particularly beneficial. Patchouli oil boasts anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, helping to soothe and protect mature skin from environmental stressors. Its natural astringent properties also help to tighten and tone the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles over time. By incorporating a patchouli-infused cleanser into your morning routine, you're not only cleansing your skin but also giving it the love and care it deserves, ensuring a radiant and youthful complexion throughout the day.

2. Apply a face oil

Using a Rose Geranium Face Oil can be a game-changer for skin in your 40s. This luxurious oil is packed with benefits that cater to the specific needs of mature skin. Rich in antioxidants, Rose Geranium oil helps to combat free radical damage, which can contribute to the visible signs of aging. Its hydrating properties deeply nourish the skin, restoring moisture and elasticity for a more plump and youthful complexion. Additionally, Rose Geranium oil has a balancing effect on the skin's natural oils, making it suitable for all skin types, including the combination and oily skin often experienced in your 40s. Its soothing aroma also offers aromatherapy benefits, promoting relaxation and reducing stress, which can further benefit your skin's overall health and appearance. Incorporating Rose Geranium Face Oil into your skincare routine can leave your skin looking and feeling rejuvenated, radiant, and beautifully hydrated throughout your 40s and beyond.

3. Moisturise

In your 40s, maintaining optimal skin hydration is essential for a youthful and radiant complexion, and using a Patchouli Light Cream can make a significant difference. This light yet nourishing cream is specifically formulated to address the unique needs of mature skin. Patchouli oil, a key ingredient in this cream, offers a myriad of benefits, including its ability to soothe inflammation, promote cell regeneration, and balance oil production. These properties make it particularly effective in addressing common concerns of aging skin, such as dryness, fine lines, and loss of elasticity. The lightweight texture of the cream ensures that it absorbs quickly into the skin without feeling heavy or greasy, leaving your skin feeling soft, supple, and deeply moisturised. Incorporating Patchouli Light Cream into your daily skincare routine can help rejuvenate and revitalise your complexion, providing the hydration and nourishment your skin needs to look its best.

4. Sun protection

A little sun can indeed be beneficial for your skin, as it provides vitamin D and a natural glow. However, it's crucial to be mindful of exposure time. Limiting sun exposure to no more than 20 minutes at a time can help prevent skin damage. The best defense against harmful UV rays is to take breaks from direct sunlight altogether. If extended time outdoors is unavoidable, choosing an organic SPF sunscreen offers effective protection while minimising exposure to potentially harmful chemicals. Additionally, many natural SPF formulations are infused with antioxidants, vitamins, and hydrating botanicals that nourish and replenish the skin while defending against environmental damage. Remember, moderation and protection are key to maintaining healthy skin under the sun's rays.

When we dive into skincare routines for those of us hitting the fabulous 40s and beyond, let's remember it's not just about the face! Don't forget about your neck, chest, and those hardworking hands! They need some love too!

PM Routine:

1. Cleanse

Cleansing nightly with an Organic Patchouli Soap Bar holds significant importance beyond mere hygiene. Patchouli boasts natural antibacterial properties, effectively removing dirt, pollutants, and excess oils accumulated throughout the day. This cleansing ritual not only purifies the skin but also relaxes the mind, promoting a sense of calmness and tranquility essential for a restful night's sleep. Moreover, choosing an organic option ensures minimal exposure to harsh chemicals, prioritising skin health and environmental sustainability. Our Patchouli soap bar, with its higher volume of essential oil compared to liquid washes, delivers a more concentrated and nourishing cleanse, leaving the skin feeling deeply refreshed and rejuvenated. Embracing this nightly routine fosters both physical and mental well-being, setting the stage for rejuvenation and renewal overnight. Additionally, the natural antibacterial properties of patchouli help reduce blemishes and hormonal breakouts, promoting clearer, healthier-looking skin.

2. Apply a face oil

Follow up with a Rose Geranium Face Oil as described above.

3. Moisturise

Rose Geranium Rich Cream is a great choice for skin in your forties due to its myriad benefits. Packed with nourishing ingredients and the rejuvenating properties of Rose Geranium essential oil, this cream offers targeted care for mature skin. Its hydrating formula helps combat the natural decrease in moisture retention that occurs with age, keeping the skin plump and supple. Additionally, Rose Geranium is known for its ability to balance hormones and sebum production, making it ideal for those experiencing hormonal changes common in this age group. Regular use of this cream can help minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while promoting a radiant complexion.

Remember everyone's skin is different. This is a general skincare routine for mature skin that would best suite someone with dry / combination skin.

For oily or acne prone skin you may want to mousturise less often with a light cream only, if you find a rich cream to heavy for you, or leave it out completely if the face oil is giving you adequate hydration. Don't skip cleansing as it not only removes dirt and pollutants but also removes excess oil and help balance your sebum levels. Keep sun screen application to a minimum by shielding your face with a hat and limiting the time you spend in the sun.

All our products come in sample sizes so you can try them out and find what works best for you!

Lifestyle Factors for Healthy Skin in your 40s

    Diet and Nutrition:

In your forties, maintaining skin health extends beyond skincare products to include diet and nutrition. The impact of diet on skin health becomes increasingly significant during this stage of life. Consuming a diet rich in antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, helps protect the skin from oxidative stress and free radical damage, ultimately supporting a youthful complexion. Additionally, staying hydrated by drinking an adequate amount of water throughout the day is crucial for maintaining skin elasticity and promoting a radiant, hydrated appearance. Incorporating foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, like fatty fish and nuts, can also help nourish the skin from within, contributing to a healthy and vibrant complexion.

    Stress Management:

In your forties, the connection between stress and skin health becomes increasingly apparent. Chronic stress can wreak havoc on the skin, leading to various issues such as increased inflammation, breakouts, and exacerbation of existing skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Managing stress effectively is therefore essential for promoting overall well-being and maintaining healthy skin. Techniques such as mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises, and regular physical activity can help reduce stress levels and promote a sense of calm and relaxation. By prioritising stress management techniques, you can not only improve your overall well-being but also promote a clear, radiant complexion.

    Importance of Sleep:

Adequate sleep plays a crucial role in skin regeneration and rejuvenation, as it allows the body to repair and replenish itself. During sleep, the body produces growth hormones that stimulate cell turnover and collagen synthesis, essential for maintaining youthful and healthy skin. Lack of sleep can lead to increased stress hormone levels, which can result in inflammation, breakouts, and accelerated aging. To improve sleep quality, establish a consistent bedtime routine, create a relaxing sleep environment, limit screen time before bed, and practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or meditation. Additionally, taking a lavender oil bath about an hour before bedtime and putting a few drops of lavender essential oil next to your pillow can aid sleep by promoting relaxation and reducing anxiety, helping you to drift off more easily into a restorative slumber. Avoid caffeine after 3pm and heavy meals close to bedtime, and aim for 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night to support optimal skin health and overall well-being.

Remember, consistency is key, so prioritise self-care and make skincare a daily ritual to enjoy the benefits of healthy, glowing skin in your 40s and beyond.

Through it all, I've come to realise that skincare isn't just about looking good – it's about feeling good, inside and out. It's about embracing the journey of aging with grace and confidence, knowing that true beauty comes from within.

How to make your own perfume with essential oils

How to make your own perfume with essential oils

If, like me, your skin is intolerant to commercial perfumes, creating your own fragrance with essential oils offers an enticing solution and it's really fun too! Crafting your own perfume allows for a personalised scent that not only smells beautiful but also provides an aromatherapy experience. With a range of essential oils to choose from, you can tailor your perfume to suit your preferences and needs, whether it's for relaxation, invigoration, or simply to express your unique style. Embracing homemade perfumery not only offers a delightful olfactory journey but also empowers you to embrace natural ingredients and their therapeutic benefits.

Things you will need for making your own perfume

Making perfume with natural organic essential oils is really easy. All you will need is a glass roll on bottle, one lightweight carrier oil and an essential oil.

    • 15 drops of your favourite essential oil
    • A light carrier oil ( not too greasy )

Essential oils, extracted from plants, offer amazing benefits for both body and mind. Just a small amount goes a long way due to their concentration. Remember to dilute them before use and avoid applying them directly to the skin.

What carrier oil is best for essential oil perfume?

The ideal choice is fractionated coconut oil, although it's a tad pricey and not readily available. Sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, sunflower oil, tomato seed oil, or safflower oil are excellent alternatives.

How to create your own perfume

    1. Choose the essential oil / oils you want to try and add to the bottle.
    2. Next fill the remainder of the bottle with your chosen carrier oil.
    3. Shake and apply. I like to apply a bit on my wrists, behind my ears, or on my neck. I also like to roll some onto the palms of my hands, cup my hands over my nose and take a few deep long breathes.

Tailor it to match your preferences and current mood. Feel free to explore and experiment!

    Natural Perfume

My favourite essential oil perfume combinations are:

    Energizing - Lemongrass (10 drops ) + Tea Tree ( 5 drops )

    Relaxing - Lavender ( 5 drops ) + Rose Geranium ( 10 drops )

    Balancing - Lavender ( 8 drops ) + Patchouli ( 7 drops )

    Anti-Anxiety - Ylang Ylang ( 15 drops )

    Tension Headache Relieving - Lemongrass ( 9 drops ) + Peppermint ( 6 drops )

I prefer using organic essential oils because they are free from synthetic additives and pesticides, promoting a healthier lifestyle and enhancing overall well-being.

    Are natural deodorants effective?

    Are natural deodorants effective?

The popularity of natural deodorants is on the rise as people become more aware of the potential health risks associated with conventional deodorant ingredients like aluminum compounds and parabens. Natural alternatives, free from synthetic chemicals, offer a safer and gentler option for those seeking skincare products aligned with their health and environmental values.

In this blog we will cover everything you need to know about natural deodorants.

    • What is natural deodorant?
    • Are natural deodorants antiperspirant?
    • Are natural deodorants effective?
    • Are natural deodorants really better for you?
    • Do natural deodorants actually work?
    • How does natural deodorant work?

What is the difference between natural deodorant and conventional ones?

Natural deodorant is formulated with ingredients derived from nature, such as bicarbonate of soda or magnesium, coconut oil and essential oils, enabling you to combat bacteria and neutralize body odour without blocking your sweat glands. How does natural deodorant work? Unlike conventional antiperspirants that contain aluminum compounds to inhibit sweating, natural deodorants work by combating odour-causing bacteria and discouraging excessive moisture, while allowing your body to naturally regulate temperature and eliminate waste. Additionally, natural deodorants typically exclude synthetic chemicals, artificial fragrances, and potentially harmful additives commonly found in conventional deodorants, making them a safer and more environmentally friendly choice for individuals seeking gentler alternatives for their skincare routines.

    Natural deodorant

Are natural deodorants really better for you?

We think so but judge for yourself. Here are the benefits:

    Skin-Friendly Formulation

Natural deodorants boast a skin-friendly formulation that prioritizes purity and simplicity. By containing no synthetic chemicals and artificial fragrances, these products are notably gentler on sensitive skin. Whether you're prone to irritation or simply prefer a more natural approach to skincare, opting for a natural deodorant can provide relief and comfort while effectively neutralizing body odour.

    Reduced Exposure to Harmful Ingredients

Conventional deodorants often harbour potentially harmful ingredients like aluminum compounds and parabens, raising concerns about their long-term effects on health. Natural deodorants offer a safer alternative by steering clear of these questionable additives. By choosing a natural option, you can significantly reduce your exposure to such harmful substances, fostering peace of mind and promoting overall well-being.

    Environmental Impact

In addition to benefiting personal health, natural deodorants also contribute positively to the environment. Many natural deodorant brands prioritise sustainability by utilising biodegradable packaging and responsibly sourced sustainable ingredients. By opting for eco-friendly alternatives, especially if they contain a large percentage of organic ingredients, you can minimise your carbon footprint and support brands committed to environmental stewardship. From reducing plastic waste to promoting biodiversity, the environmental impact of choosing natural organic deodorants extends far beyond individual skincare routines.

    Do natural deodorants actually work?

Despite common misconceptions, natural deodorants can be highly effective at combating body odour and maintaining freshness throughout the day. Understanding how to optimize odour control and sweat absorption is key to unlocking the full potential of these products. By choosing natural deodorants with suitable ingredients and applying them correctly, you can experience reliable protection without compromising on your health and well-being.

How long does it take to adjust to a natural deodorant?

Transitioning to natural deodorant may entail an adjustment period as the body adapts to the absence of certain chemicals and regains its natural balance. During this initial phase, you may experience temporary changes in odour and sweat patterns. However, with a little patience and perseverance, these challenges are quickly overcome. Strategies for managing this transition include applying natural deodorants more regularly throughout the day and maintaining good hygiene practices to minimise discomfort and ensure a smooth transition to natural alternatives.

If you have sensitive skin, it's important to approach the use of natural deodorants with caution to avoid potential reactions to certain ingredients like bicarbonate or essential oils. Conducting a small 24-hour patch test behind the ear or inside the elbow can help assess any adverse reactions before applying the product to a larger area. This simple precautionary measure allows you to identify any potential allergens or irritants and make informed decisions about your skincare routine. If you do find a natural deodorant is irritating to your skin there are Unscented Natural Cream Deodorants for Extra Sensitive Skin that are free from Bicarbonate & Essential Oil.

    Choosing a natural deodorant

It's essential to seek out products formulated with high-quality, ethically sourced ingredients that promote both skin health and environmental sustainability. By fostering a deeper understanding of ingredient lists, you can navigate the vast array of natural deodorant options available with confidence and clarity. Look for high quality natural organic ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil and organic essential oils.

    Natural Deodorant

What purpose do essential oils serve in natural deodorants?

Essential oils are commonly incorporated into natural deodorants for several reasons. Firstly, their aromatic properties provide pleasant scents, masking body odor without the need for synthetic fragrances that may contain potentially harmful chemicals. Additionally, many essential oils possess antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, which can help to combat the bacteria responsible for causing body odor. Moreover, these oils are often chosen for their skin-soothing qualities, reducing irritation and inflammation. Overall, essential oils offer a holistic approach to odor control in natural deodorants, providing both effective odor-fighting properties and a more gentle, skin-friendly alternative to conventional perfumed options.

    Using natural cream deodorants

To use natural deodorant effectively, apply a thin layer to clean, dry underarms, ensuring full coverage for all-day freshness without harsh chemicals.

    Top Tips:

      • Can also be used between the toes, not just to combat odour but as a natural remedy for athlete's foot especially our Benchmark Thyme Deodorant.
      • Wash your underarms and other places you sweat, and dry your skin completely.
      • Before applying, warm it up the cream slightly by gently rolling it between your fingertips or holding it against your underarm skin for a few seconds.
      • Gently massage the deodorant into your skin using circular motions until fully absorbed.

Do not apply to broken skin and if possible, avoid applying straight after shaving. We recommend you shave in the evening and use the deodorant in the morning.

        Does shaving armpits reduce odour?

Shaving armpits can indeed help reduce body odour. When you shave your armpits, you remove hair that can trap sweat and bacteria, which are major contributors to odour. With less hair, there is less surface area for bacteria to thrive, resulting in a decrease in odour. Additionally, shaving allows deodorant to be applied more evenly and effectively to the skin, further combating odour. However, it's essential to note that personal hygiene habits, such as regular bathing and using deodorant, also play significant roles in controlling body odour.

How to clear up rosacea naturally.

How to clear up rosacea naturally.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that mostly affects women, in particular those with fair skin, but symptoms can be worse in men. If you are living with rosacea then you already know how challenging the discomfort and irritation can be. Although the exact cause of rosacea is unknown there are natural treatments that can help relieve symptoms and minimize flareups.

Lets take a look at the causes, symptoms and how to manage your rosacea naturally...

What is the main cause of rosacea?

The exact cause of rosacea is not fully understood, although genetics may play a part other factors such as environmental triggers, abnormalities in blood vessels, and an overactive immune system response may play a part too. Additionally, factors such as sunlight exposure, spicy foods, alcohol, hot beverages, temperature extremes, stress, and certain medications can exacerbate symptoms in individuals prone to rosacea. Understanding these triggers can help manage the condition effectively through lifestyle adjustments and targeted treatments.

What are the symptoms of rosacea?

The first sign of rosacea often starts with redness. It may appear like sunburn and can become acute on the cheeks as well as nose, forehead and chin.

          Other symptoms include:

          • flushing
          • bumps or pimples
          • broken blood vessels
          • sensitive skin
          • eye dryness and watering

What does a bad case of rosacea look like?

          A bad case of rosacea

A severe case of rosacea typically presents as persistent redness across the central part of the face, often accompanied by visible blood vessels (telangiectasia). The skin may appear inflamed, with papules and pustules resembling acne lesions. In some instances, the nose may become swollen and bulbous due to tissue buildup (rhinophyma). Flare-ups can cause intense flushing and burning sensations, leading to discomfort and self-consciousness. These symptoms can significantly impact one's quality of life, both physically and emotionally.

Who is most prone to rosacea?

While anyone can have rosacea and genetics may be a contributing factor, it's more likely to develop in people aged between 30 - 55. Rosacea is also more common in women especially during menopause. Studies have show that people from Celtic or Scandinavian background may also be at higher risk and those with fair skin.

          What clears rosacea naturally?

Adjusting your skincare routine is one of the simplest ways to help manage rosacea. A natural gentle approach will help minimize irritation and with the right ingredients can help alleviate symptoms too. Ingredients such as Lemongrass and Aloe Vera have been identified for their effectiveness in helping calm and soothe symptoms and reducing flareups. Use a natural organic cleanser bar and organic moisturiser containing just the right amount of Lemongrass essential oil and Aloe Vera daily for relief and healthy nourished skin.

          Natural Rosacea Treatment

          Lemongrass Essential Oil

Rosacea is characterised by inflammation of the skin, often leading to redness, swelling, and irritation. Lemongrass Essential oil contains compounds like citral and limonene, which possess anti-inflammatory properties, helping to reduce redness and soothe irritated skin. Additionally, its antimicrobial properties can help combat bacteria on the skin's surface, alleviating rosacea symptoms even further. When applied topically, lemongrass products can provide relief from the discomfort associated with rosacea, making it a natural and effective option for managing this condition.

          Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has gained recognition for its effectiveness in soothing the symptoms of rosacea due to its potent anti-inflammatory and moisturising properties. The aloe vera plant contains compounds such as polysaccharides, glycoproteins, and antioxidants, which work together to calm the redness, irritation, and inflammation associated with rosacea flare-ups. Additionally, aloe vera's hydrating nature helps to replenish the skin's moisture barrier, reducing dryness and preventing further irritation. Its gentle and soothing nature makes it suitable for sensitive skin.

          Lifestyle changes to manage rosacea

Managing rosacea often involves making lifestyle changes to minimize symptoms and flare-ups. in addition to adopting a gentle skincare routine, avoiding triggers such as spicy foods, alcohol, hot beverages, and extreme temperatures can help reduce the redness and inflammation associated with rosacea. Additionally, managing stress through relaxation techniques like meditation or yoga may help alleviate symptoms, as stress can exacerbate flare-ups. Overall, adopting an holistic approach to skincare, diet, and stress management can play a significant role in managing rosacea and promoting skin health.

What happens if rosacea is left untreated?

If rosacea is left untreated, it can progressively worsen over time, leading to more pronounced symptoms and potential complications. Without proper management, the characteristic facial redness, flushing, and visible blood vessels associated with rosacea may become more severe. In some cases, untreated rosacea can result in the development of papules, pustules, and thickened skin, particularly on the nose (rhinophyma). Additionally, ocular rosacea, which affects the eyes, can cause dryness, irritation, and even vision problems if left unaddressed. Furthermore, the psychological impact of untreated rosacea, such as decreased self-esteem and confidence due to the visible facial changes, can significantly affect an individual's quality of life. Therefore, adopting appropriate treatment strategies are crucial in managing rosacea and preventing its progression.

How to make natural air freshener

How to make natural air freshener

I used to rely on store-bought air fresheners to bring a pleasant aroma into my home, but I found myself consistently disappointed by their artificial scents and lackluster performance. When I discovered that these products were loaded with harsh chemicals and might be the cause of my headaches, I knew I had to make a change. I turned to DIY solutions and never looked back. I'm thrilled I made the switch to a natural air freshener. No more headaches and my home has never smelled better!

Why is making your own natural air freshener better than store-bought?

Creating your own natural air freshener is an absolute game-changer! Not only does it bring a burst of feel-good aromatherapy into your space, but it also packs a powerful punch of freshness without any harsh chemicals. By crafting your own, you're in the driver's seat, customizing scents that reflect your personality and preferences. Plus, it's an eco-friendly choice that reduces wasteful packaging. Especially eco-friendly if you use organic essential oil promoting organic farming with 50% more wildlife. With simple ingredients like essential oils and water, making your own air freshener is a fun and rewarding project that leaves your home smelling naturally fresh in seconds. So why settle for store-bought when you can infuse your surroundings with your own signature scent, making every inhale a joyful experience?

What you will need to make your own natural air freshener

          Organic Essential Oils

How to make a natural air freshener

          1. Pour the vodka into an 8 ounce spray bottle. Add 10-40 drops of your desired essential oil(s).
          2. Let the oils sit for 5 minutes, and then shake well. Next add the water.
          3. Shake again and spray!
          4. Before each use, it's essential to give the spray bottle a gentle shake to ensure the even distribution of essential oils within the liquid before spraying.

You can make the scent as strong as you want by altering the amount of essential oil.

Lavender, Peppermint, Lemongrass and Rose Geranium make great air fresheners, but you can use any essential oil combination (or just one) that smells good to you. I like to experiment with different blends according to my mood, the season, or time of day.

It's fun to come up with your own special blends. Here are a few of my favourites. As with any essential oil blend recipe, tweak the ratios to suit your own needs and preferences.

          Natural air freshener FAQ

How long do natural air fresheners last?

A natural air freshener will last up to two weeks in the fridge. It's good practice to refresh or replenish the air freshener as needed to maintain a consistent level of fragrance in your space.

Do you have to use filtered water to make a natural air freshener?

No, but tap water contains chemicals and may affect the smell of your room spray.

Why does my natural air freshener look cloudy?

If your spray looks cloudy don't worry. It's just what happens sometimes when you combine particular ingredients. It will not affect the quality or aroma of the spray.

Why doesn't my natural air freshener have a stronger smell?

Natural air fresheners are meant to be used as a quick air freshening boost. If you want a stronger smell, just add more organic essential oils.

Are skin and hair care products harming our oceans?

Are Skin & Hair Care Products Harming Our Oceans?

Unfortunately the answer is Yes. Awareness is growing regarding the influence of skin and hair care products on ocean ecosystems that provide us with over 70% of the oxygen that we breathe.  No wonder stories of coral reef damage, hormone disruption in fish, and plastic causing harm to marine life are more prevalent than ever before.

Here at New Dawn on the beautiful coast of Pembrokeshire, we are dedicated to creating ocean-friendly products that not only rejuvenate your skin and hair but also keep the ecological balance of our planet's main life-support system...our precious oceans!

5 skin and hair care ingredients that are harmful to our oceans

          1. Plastic Micro-beads

Micro-beads are tiny, non-biodegradable particles, often found in personal care products like exfoliating scrubs and toothpaste, they're too minuscule to be effectively filtered out by wastewater treatment plants. As a result, they enter waterways and oceans, accumulating in staggering quantities. Marine organisms mistakenly consume these microbeads, causing internal damage and potentially entering the food chain. Banning and avoiding products containing these harmful microbeads is a crucial step in preserving the delicate balance of our marine environments.

Alternative: Poppy seeds are environmentally friendly and biodegradable.

Tea Tree Soap with Poppy Seeds

          2. Triclosan (TCS)

Triclosan, a common antimicrobial agent, is present in various everyday products, ranging from antibacterial soaps and acne treatments to shampoos. While intended to combat harmful bacteria, its consequences on aquatic ecosystems, particularly coral reefs, are deeply concerning. Studies reveal that triclosan hampers the growth and development of blue-green algae, essential for the overall health and resilience of coral communities. The intricate symbiotic relationship between coral and algae plays a pivotal role in sustaining the vibrant biodiversity of coral reefs. Moreover, triclosan has exhibited detrimental effects on fish populations, with documented instances of increased mortality. Sustainable choices in personal care products can help preserve marine ecosystems, ensuring a healthier future for our oceans and the myriad species they support... including us humans!

Alternative: Organic Essential Oils like Patchouli, Tea Tree, Lavender and Benchmark Thyme for their antibacterial properties.

          3. Parabens

Parabens are synthetic preservatives commonly used in cosmetics, skincare, and personal care products to extend shelf life by inhibiting the growth of bacteria and molds. Parabens have been associated with coral reef degradation and have been detected in marine mammals like otters and dolphins, posing risks, particularly in relation to reproductive health.

Alternative: Choose natural organic skincare that is paraben-free.

          4. Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS)

Sulphate, added as a foaming agent in products such as shower gel and toothpaste, is non-essential and has the potential to induce toxicity in marine organisms, affecting their growth, reproduction, and overall health. Additionally, the foaming properties of sulphates may interfere with the natural surface tension of water, impeding oxygen exchange and further jeopardising the well-being of marine environments.

Alternative: Choose SLS free Toothpaste and Washes or Soaps that don't contain Sulfates/Sulphates.

          5. Oxybenzone

A common ingredient in many sunscreens, Oxybenzone has been identified as a significant threat to coral reefs and other marine life. As sunscreen users enjoy the sun, it washes off into oceans, where it can accumulate and lead to coral bleaching, a phenomenon that weakens and ultimately endangers coral reefs. The adverse impact extends beyond corals, affecting various marine species, from fish to invertebrates.

Alternative: Shade - All Natural 72% Organic SPF25 Sunscreen. 100% natural marine-safe sun care for all the family!
